Fire on Monday destroyed a Bakery at Area 36 in Lilongwe.<\/p>\n
This could probably be a summary of a year plagued by market fires.\u00a0 Area
\n18, Kasungu, Mzuzu, and Mzimba markets have been some of the markets
\ndestroyed by fires in the year.<\/p>\n
Cookies Bakery was up in flames after what is suspected to be power surge
\ncaused the inferno.<\/p>\n
The fire started at around 9:30 in the morning. Fortunately Lilongwe City
\nCouncil fire brigade arrived at the scene within 20 minutes and managed to
\nrestrict the inferno to the Bakery.<\/p>\n
According to an eye witness, Davison Steven, there was smoke coming from
\nthe bakery, before flames were seen.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople started taking out the some items from the adjacent retail shop.
\nHowever the fire did not spread to other parts of the building,\u201d Steven
\nsays.<\/p>\n
The whole building houses close ten shops. Some of the businesses plying
\ntheir trade in the building are a pharmacy, an internet cafe and butchery.<\/p>\n
Owner of the Bakery, Samson Kondowe, said the fire was caused by some
\nfluctuation in power levels.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m told that there were some fluctuations in power levels. This cause
\nsome fuses to burst, leading to the fire,\u201d Kondowe said.<\/p>\n
He was however quick to acknowledge efforts by Lilongwe City Council Fire
\nBrigade.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey managed to control the fire. They did their best,\u201d Kondowe said.<\/p>\n
