Former national junior welterweight champion, Osgood Kayuni narrowly edged out challenger, Salimu Chazama, on a split decision in an eight-round non-title fight at Lilongwe Community Centre on Saturday.<\/p>\n
In a closely-contested battle, one judge scored 78-76 for Chazama while two judges gave it Kayuni 78-77 and 77-76.<\/p>\n
However, the result left Chazama seething with rage, accusing judges of denying him a clear victory.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am still confused. I don\u2019t know how the judges arrived at those scores. I dominated the fight. Maybe, the only round which Kayuni came hard was the seventh. If I did or speak something against the Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board, I ask for forgiveness,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
However, Kayuni said he was a clear winner because Chazama wasted most of his punches.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course, I sustained a cut but that is not a guarantee that I lost. If you can\u2019t knock-out your opponent, then you must know how to land scoring punches and duck,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Kayuni said he would welcome a re-match if Chazama wishes.<\/p>\n
According to reports, the first two rounds were close with Kayuni dominating the opening three rounds, while Chazama dominated the last three.<\/p>\n
Both boxers floored each other, and Kayuni sustained a cut above his right eye in the fifth round.<\/p>\n
New Dawn Boxing Promotions managing director, Mike Chimaliza, said it was a successful fight.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe patron age was impressive despite having rains in the morning. We thank the Lord because the weather was so kind in the afternoon. I think both boxers were good.
