{"id":14803,"date":"2015-12-21T15:54:30","date_gmt":"2015-12-21T13:54:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=14803"},"modified":"2015-12-21T15:54:30","modified_gmt":"2015-12-21T13:54:30","slug":"kagame-gets-98-4-yes-praises-controversial-referendum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2015\/12\/21\/kagame-gets-98-4-yes-praises-controversial-referendum\/","title":{"rendered":"Kagame gets 98.4% yes, praises controversial referendum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rwanda&#8217;s President Paul Kagame has praised last week&#8217;s constitutional referendum which allows him to run for a controversial third term, the AFP news agency reports.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;yes&#8221; vote in favour of the constitutional change garnered 98.4%, according to official results, AFP reports.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No individual is forever, but there is no term limit on values, institutions, or progress,&#8221; Mr Kagame is quoted as saying in his annual State of the Nation address, it reports.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When the time comes to transfer responsibility, Rwandans already have confidence that it will be done,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Kagame has not yet said whether he intends to contest the 2017 election, and has told Western powers not to interfere in Rwanda&#8217;s affairs.<\/p>\n<p>The US has urged him to step down at the end of his term.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Kagame has ruled Rwanda since the end of the 1994 genocide.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbouring Burundi has been hit by unrest over President Pierre Nkuruniza&#8217;s decision to seek a third term.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rwanda&#8217;s President Paul Kagame has praised last week&#8217;s constitutional referendum which allows him to run for a controversial third term, the AFP news agency reports.
