Nanzikambe Arts has said they are getting funding for the construction of the new venue in Chimwankhunda in Blantyre in bits but will start works by January.<\/p>\n
Coordinator Mphundu Mjumira assured theatre lovers that they are making progress on the new venue.<\/p>\n
Nanzikambe Arts moved from Naperi in Blantyre last year to occupy their new home in Chimwankhunda but no activities have been going on thereafter.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are getting funds little by little. We will start building in January now that some funds are in. We had to have enough funds to start. But I assure people that [come] January we are moving on with that,\u201d said Mjumira.<\/p>\n
With some quarters asking whether Nanzikambe\u2019s movement from Naperi was the end of their operations, Mjumira said by mid March, the space in Chimwankhunda will be functioning.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know there is also a process to do these things and as an organisation, we were trying not to do things in short cut,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In the absence of a proper venue, Nanzikambe Arts has been holding its performances in other venues.<\/p>\n
The theatre group also recently saw one of its members Misheck Mzumara join Mzuzu University where he is currently teaching drama.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s true Misheck Mzumara is now with Mzuzu University but he is still part of us. You know Nanzikambe is like a family with strong roots. He is still available when his time allows,\u201d said Mjumira.<\/p>\n
He said there are also other members working with other organisations but were available for Nanzikambe operations.<\/p>\n
He also said that despite the group having no home for its performances at the moment, they were still active holding performances in other venues.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have been active as a group. We have Animal Farm <\/em>which is running now and has just toured Europe as well as Waiting for Godot,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Mjumira said Animal Farm <\/em>will be staged at Cape Maclear in Mangochi this coming weekend and Chingalire Rural Growth Centre in Lilongwe on January 1.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are also working on a production with a German director which is featuring Fikisa and young upcoming artists. So we are not dormant as some people think although we still do not have a home,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Mjumira said as a group they have also been holding shows in hospitals and schools in conjunction with Burns Unit at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre.<\/p>\n \u201cWe had two shows per week and we are starting again in January.
