An emotional Pope Francis, wearing a plastic poncho over his vestments to protect him from the wind and rain on Saturday, comforted survivors of Typhoon Haiyan, the Philippines\u2019 worst natural disaster that killed about 6,300 people 14 months ago.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would like to tell you something close to my heart,\u201d Francis told worshippers as strong wind whipped the seaside area, putting aside his prepared homily to deliver a moving, impromptu address.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I saw from Rome that catastrophe, I felt that I had to be here. On those very days I decided to come here. I am here to be with you. Perhaps a little late, I have to say, but I am here,\u201d he told emotional worshippers.<\/p>\n
About 160,000 people wearing yellow raincoats cheered when Francis emerged from his plane in the coastal city of Tacloban in Leyte province, 650 km (400 miles) southeast of Manila. The strong wind blew the white skull cap from Francis\u2019 head and rippled his white cassock as he disembarked in Tacloban.<\/p>\n
The Pope cut short his visit to Leyte by about four hours and returned to Manila before the weather worsened. He stopped for a quick lunch with Haiyan survivors but skipped a blessing of the Vatican-funded Pope Francis centre for the poor.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe weather forecast says \u2026 it\u2019s going to get much worse. So I apologise to you all. I\u2019m sad about this, truly saddened,\u201d the Pope said to moans of disappointment from hundreds of priests, nuns and others at a cathedral in Palo, Leyte, which was severely damaged by Haiyan.<\/p>\n
Thousands of worshippers, many with tears in their eyes, stood amid puddles in a mud-soaked field as the Pope comforted them during a morning Mass.<\/p>\n
He said he \u201crespected the feelings\u201d of those who felt they had been let down by God because of the disaster but implored them to move forward in their faith.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany of you have asked the Lord, \u2018Why?\u2019 And to each of you the Lord is responding to your hearts from his heart \u2026 so many of you have lost everything. I don\u2019t know what to say to you but the Lord does know what to say to you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Nearly 3,000 victims are buried in the city\u2019s almost half-hectare mass grave site. Hundreds are still unaccounted for.<\/p>\n
He asked the crowd to hold a moment of silence for the victims and thanked all those who helped the survivors of the worst recorded storm ever to make landfall.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is what comes from my heart and forgive me if I have no other words to express,\u201d Francis said.<\/p>\n

\u2018PIERCED MY HEART\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n Hundreds of thousands of people, many who had travelled from other cities and provinces, lined the streets from the airport to Palo.<\/p>\n \u201cWe came from a very far place but he was from a place much farther than our own town,\u201d said Maria Alda Panahustad, who travelled for eight hours by boat and bus from Eastern Samar province to see the Pope.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat he said pierced my heart. My house was destroyed by Yolanda (Haiyan), and again by Ruby,\u201d she said, referring to another storm that hit the central Philippines last month, killing 27 people.<\/p>\n Saturday\u2019s storm was an eerie reminder of Haiyan, which hit the same area with 250 kph (155 mph) winds and created a seven-metre high storm surge, wiping out almost everything in its path when it swept ashore on Nov. 8, 2013.<\/p>\n Haiyan destroyed about 90 percent of Tacloban city in Leyte. More than 14.5 million people were affected in six regions and 44 provinces.
