Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has asked people in the country to stop relying on Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) for the provision of electricity all the time because the corporation does not have such capacity.<\/p>\n
MERA Chief Executive Officer Ralph Kamoto gave the warning on Friday when his organization awarded three best Mzuzu University students pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Renewable Energy Technologies.<\/p>\n
This was the fourth time MERA has awarded best students at Mzuni.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe should not look for Escom to give power to us all the time because they will not. They have their own challenges. We need to accelerate access to electricity. The low electrification rate and the various challenges facing the energy industry are a call enough for us all not to watch and wait but to be part of the solution and to seek to rise together,\u201d said Kamoto.<\/p>\n
Kamoto challenged students doing studies in energy to provide solutions to the energy sector.<\/p>\n
He announced that from next year, MERA would offer two internship opportunities for Mzuni students pursuing a degree in Renewable Energy Technologies.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe continue to make strides to strengthen partnerships that can help accelerate the efficiency of the energy sector. For an institution like MERA it is even more natural to take a special interest in Energy Studies because energy regulation which among other responsibilities includes promoting increasing access to energy supplies and promoting the exploitation of renewable energy resources is the essence of our establishment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Mzuni Deputy Vice Chancellor Loveness Gondwe thanked MERA for giving awards to best students in the energy department since four years ago. She said the awards have a great impact on their studies. She also thanked MERA for offering two internship places for Mzuni students.<\/p>\n
