The Malawi Lotteries and Gaming Board saysjournalists have an important role to play in sensitising the masses about gaming and lotteries in the country.<\/p>\n
Gaming Board chairperson Billy Banda was speaking in Blantyre on Friday during an orientation workshop for business reporters.<\/p>\n
Banda said there are a number of benefits that nations have derived from gaming and lotteries.<\/p>\n
He also urged the reporters to promote what he described as responsible gambling.<\/p>\n
According to Banda, Malawians need to look at gambling as a form of entertainment and not a business, adding that they must only gamble using money they are willing to lose.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe at the board believe that reporters have a pivotal role to play in sensitizing the masses on the good side as well as the evils of irresponsible gambling,\u201d said Banda.<\/p>\n
During the workshop, the journalists were informed that in other countries proceeds from lotteries and gaming have been used to build large stadiums as well as other social projects.<\/p>\n
In Malawi, the Lotteries Board has channeled such proceeds towards buildings clinics in all the regions of the country as well as assisting Malawians in time of need such as the January 2015 floods.<\/p>\n
Banda also told reporters that he expects the coming in of the new national operator to revolutionalise the industry.<\/p>\n
The board this year gave an operating license to Gidani International of South Africa to operate a national lottery in Malawi.<\/p>\n
The firm was supposed to start operations late this year but has delayed its rollout to early next year.<\/p>\n
According to Banda, Gidani is dangling a K100 million payout to one lotto winner.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
