{"id":14090,"date":"2015-12-14T08:44:08","date_gmt":"2015-12-14T06:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=14090"},"modified":"2015-12-14T08:44:08","modified_gmt":"2015-12-14T06:44:08","slug":"south-africa-david-van-rooyen-fired-and-pravin-gordhan-hired","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2015\/12\/14\/south-africa-david-van-rooyen-fired-and-pravin-gordhan-hired\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa: David van Rooyen fired and Pravin Gordhan hired"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">South African President Jacob Zuma has replaced newly appointed Finance Minister David van Rooyen with the more experienced Pravin Gordhan in a surprise Sunday night announcement.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the president sacked Nhlanhla Nene in a move that sent the rand to record lows and sparked a sell-off in bank shares.<\/p>\n<p>His replacement for less than a week, Mr van Rooyen, is <a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-35059563\">a little-known MP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The latest move sent the rand up almost 5% on Sunday night.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Gordhan was widely respected when he served as South Africa&#8217;s finance minister from 2009 until 2014.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;Russian roulette&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>However, Mohammed Nalla, head of research at Nedbank Capital, said having a finance minister serve just two days did not bode well for South Africa&#8217;s reputation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;International investors are probably thinking: why didn&#8217;t the president make a much more considered decision in the first place?&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The leader of the opposition Democratic Alliance party, Mmusi Maimane, said: &#8220;This is reckless by President Zuma &#8211; he is playing Russian roulette with the South African economy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A statement from Mr Zuma&#8217;s office said he had &#8220;received many representations&#8221; to reconsider his decision to appoint Mr van Rooyen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a democratic government, we emphasise the importance of listening to the people and to respond to their views,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p>Credit agency Fitch downgraded South Africa earlier this month, leaving South Africa just one notch above &#8220;junk&#8221; status.
