Football Association of Malawi (Fam) is expected to send a representative to Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) annual general meeting (AGM) scheduled for South Africa next weekend.<\/p>\n
There is an added dimension to the December 19 Cosafa AGM as it will attract special guests in Fifa presidential candidates, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim al Khalifa and Tokyo Sexwale.<\/p>\n
The candidates want to drum up support from football associations from this part of Africa.<\/p>\n
Fam general secretary, Suzgo Nyirenda, confirmed on Wednesday that Cosafa has invited Malawi to the congress scheduled for Sandton.<\/p>\n
\u201cFam has not yet decided who it will vote for in the Fifa elections. Possibly, this will be done by the new executive committee [for Fam],\u201d Nyirenda said in a response to a questionnaire.<\/p>\n
Sheik Salman, a member of the Bahrain royal family, is one of the frontrunners in the race to replace Sepp Blatter and will be given a chance to address the leaders of the 14-member Cosafa, South Africa media reported on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
South Africa\u2019s Sexwale is likewise canvassing for football\u2019s top administrative job, but he is not regarded among the favourites, Mzansi Football wrote.<\/p>\n
Uefa general secretary Gianni Infantino \u2014 who is the biggest challenge to Sheikh Salman\u2019s hopes \u2014 has not indicated whether he will go to the meeting but he has already been canvassing for support in the region. He was in Maputo in October to watch Mozambique play a World Cup qualifier against Gabon.<\/p>\n
Others in the race are Jerome Champagne, formerly Blatter\u2019s right-hand man who left Fifa in 2010, and Prince Ali of Jordan, who challenged Blatter for the FIFA presidency last year.<\/p>\n
The new Fifa president will be decided in Zurich, Switzerland, in February.<\/p>\n
The 14 members of Cosafa are Angola, Botswana, the Comoros Islands, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, the Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
