{"id":1350,"date":"2015-01-19T13:25:19","date_gmt":"2015-01-19T13:25:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=1350"},"modified":"2015-01-19T13:25:19","modified_gmt":"2015-01-19T13:25:19","slug":"police-banks-meeting-fails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2015\/01\/19\/police-banks-meeting-fails\/","title":{"rendered":"Police, banks\u2019 meeting fails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A planned meeting organised by Police Headquarters in Lilongwe on Friday for the country\u2019s commercial banks failed to take place due to poor turnout by the financial institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives of the banks were scheduled to meet deputy Police Inspector General and other senior officers to discuss security issues affecting the banks.<\/p>\n<p>Out of 11 banks operating in the country, only three, namely FMB, Standard Bank and Nedbank, sent their representatives to the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>After two hour s of waiting for officials from the other banks, Malawi Police officers cancelled the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi Police\u2019s director of Community Policing and Rural Police, Masauko Medi said they will make another attempt to approach the banks for the meeting to bang heads on how security for banks can be strengthened following robberies involving hundreds of millions of kwacha.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe planned to meet the banks to share ideas on how to strengthen security inside and outside the banks. We have seen that police officers and bank employees have been involved and that means both of us are responsible and we need to work together to tighten the security,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He suggested that improved Closed Circuit Television with wider diameter outside banks and rigorous scrutiny of key staff by police before employed by banks could be among ways that can help contain the robberies.<\/p>\n<p>Recent bank robberies have seen over K700 million being stolen from banks<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A planned meeting organised by Police Headquarters in Lilongwe on Friday for the country\u2019s commercial banks failed to take place due to poor turnout by the financial institutions.
