Newly-established\u00a0Tauka Athletics Club says lack of competitions is hindering the progress of the sport in the country.<\/p>\n
The club\u2019s founder, a Malawi Police Service Sub Inspector Limbikani Chiumia, made the remarks after organising an invitational championship at Andiamo Campus in Balaka last week.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a good crop of athletes that can reach their full potential if they are exposed to both local and international tournaments. Painfully, we don\u2019t have enough tournaments to groom budding athletes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Chiumia said they organised the invitational tournament during the club\u2019s launch to showcase the talent which the nation has.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have talent in abundance but sadly we don\u2019t have championships to nurture budding athletes. This is why we sought help from various people and organisations in the society to hold an invitational tournament on our launch,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Agora Limited, Superior Halaal Meat, Shoprite, Scania, Sheffer Mumba, Pastor Alice Msowoya of Wilson and Morgan, Charles Ulaya and Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) honourary president justice Dunstain Mwaungulu were some of the well-wishers that supported the cause.<\/p>\n
The invitational tournament attracted clubs such as Malawi Defence Force, Malawi Police, Mzuzu, Mulanje, Lilongwe, Kamuzu Institute, Tauka and the hosts, Andiamo.<\/p>\n
During the championship, Susan Tengatenga dominated both 100m and 200m in women\u2019s category while Francis Khanje won 12km men\u2019s championship and was followed by Abina Tchinga on second.<\/p>\n
Tereza Master emerged champion in ladies\u2019 5000m category with Dorothy Fisha ending second.<\/p>\n
Chiumia led by example when he emerged 400m men\u2019s champion while Raymond Mpama was second.<\/p>\n
In 3000m, Cecelia Mhango of Mzuzu won the race and Ruth Chibale followed on second.<\/p>\n
Renowned Kefasi Kasten won the men\u2019s title of similar distance with Abina Tchinga finishing second.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
