Football Association of Malawi (Fam) might spend over K10 million on its December 12 elections scheduled for Mangochi, amid reports that candidates will not pay nomination fees.<\/p>\n
Fam general secretary, Suzgo Nyirenda, during the week confirmed that the association will spend millions on the elections scheduled for Nkopola Lodge and that actual figures would emerge later.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe money will come from our allocation of the fourth quarter under FAP [Financial Assistance Programme]. We already submitted our plan of activities to Fifa. We want to provide enough security to all delegates. The budget might exceed K10 million,\u201d Nyirenda explained.<\/p>\n
He further confirmed that candidates would not pay nomination fee to be eligible to contest.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, presidential aspirant Wilkins Mijiga launched his manifesto yesterday, while the incumbent Walter Nyamilandu and Willy Yabwanya Phiri followed suit yesterday.<\/p>\n
This is in sharp contrast to elections for other sports bodies such as Super League of Malawi (Sulom) whose candidates for the post of president paid K50,000 each while the other aspirants forked out K30,000 each.<\/p>\n
Nyirenda, who holds a similar position in the electoral board, said this was in line with the statutes.<\/p>\n
\u201cFam statutes do not allow it, as such, once candidates meet required conditions to contest, they are free and eligible to stand. If you recall, aspirants had to collect nomination forms to contest Sulom, but that is not the case at Fam,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Nyirenda said, similarly, there was no fee attached to candidates wishing to appeal.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is clearly stipulated in the statutes. So, we can\u2019t impose any fees when the statutes do not say so,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Malawi National Council of Sports executive secretary, George Jana, said there was nothing wrong with imposing no fees for candidates to contest.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course, we are just observers and we are not directly involved in matters regarding the polls. Unless it was stated in the statutes, then nomination fees would have been an issue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Aspirants for the vice-presidency are Tiyanjane Somba-Banda and James Leonard Mwenda. Othaniel Hara and Pikawo Ngalamira face off for the position of second vice-president. Fam Electoral Committee chaired by Justice Dingiswayo Madise is in charge of the electoral process.<\/p>\n
Aspirants for the position of committee member are Jabbar Alide, Alfred Gunda, Masauko Medi, Hubert Mfune, Daud Mtanthiko, Flora Mwandira and Rashid Ntelela.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
