Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) yesterday donated K1 million to the newly formed Association for the Magistrates in Malawi (AMA) which is expected to be officially launched this weekend in Zomba.<\/p>\n
Making the donation, MTL Chief Technical Officer Herbert Maosa said they appreciate the work that magistrates in the country do hence the support towards the organization.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe appreciate that magistrates should be able to deliver their duties in the way they would like to, hence our support for the activities of the association,\u201d said Maosa.<\/p>\n
He also said MTL has been a victim of theft and sabotage of its infrastructure and the courts have been dealing with the cases of crime guided by the law.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut I would like you to know that so many service providers like banks, hospitals, the corporate world and other telecommunication companies depend on us in one way or another and these crimes that you handle are not MTL crimes, they go beyond MTL, they are national crimes because if our infrastructure is targeted by thieves and saboteurs so many service providers are also affected,\u201d added Maosa.<\/p>\n
Interim spokesperson of AMA Kondani Chinangwa thanked MTL for the timely donation especially at a time when the association is preparing for its official launch this weekend.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe approached several companies for financial support and MTL has emerged the best donor from the corporate world. We say thank you and we do not take this for granted,\u201d said Chinangwa.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the sentences the magistrates give especially to thieves and saboteurs of MTL property, Chinangwa said they always look at the law and the evidence available.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut perhaps we need to engage other stakeholders more to find out if the sentences we pass are deterrent enough for people not to destroy the infrastructure which affects many people if destroyed.
