Malawi Council for the Handicapped (Macoha) has appealed to government and other stakeholders to consider constructing buildings that are friendly to the disabled.<\/p>\n
Macoha Rehabilitation Officer, Denis Mpunga, said the disabled are neglected, noting that many buildings have stairs that make it difficult for them to access.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you go around the cities of this country, you find out that there are buildings that the disabled cannot go to because of the stairs that are in those buildings,\u201d Mpunga explained.<\/p>\n
Mpunga said as disabled people, they lack a lot as they rely on government for almost everything and sometimes the funds are not enough to carter for all their needs.<\/p>\n
In a related development, Nico Holdings Ltd in partnership with Puma donated 80 white canes (walking sticks for visually impaired people) worth K2.8 million to Macoha.<\/p>\n
Nico Holdings Ltd\u2019s Corporate Manager Mbumba Mlia said they have a foundation that looks at health and security of the people so they decided to help the people who are blind.<\/p>\n
\u201cNico and Puma through Nico Foundation would like to give our friends an opportunity to experience a complete life by providing them with tools that will enable them achieve safe mobility,\u201d explained Mlia.<\/p>\n
One of the beneficiaries\u2019 Ulemu Kumwenda, said the walking sticks will help her a lot as she will be able to walk alone without support from anyone.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will be able to go to my work place without help from anyone. I can even walk on the road with no difficulties, but I have to ask authorities to construct buildings that we can easily access,\u201d said Kamwendo.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
