Fifa\u2019s Electoral Committee has trimmed the number of the world football governing body\u2019s presidential candidates from seven to five.<\/p>\n
Local football refereeing legend, Bester Kalombo, believes the trimming augurs well for African candidate, Tokyo Sexwale\u2019s presidential bid.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy point remains that Fifa presidency has been dominated by Europeans (eight), then South America, Africa, Asia and Concacaf, none! This should be time for Africa. But the question is, are we united?\u201d said the former Caf refereeing manager Thursday.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is football administration if you do not know marketing and how to run a business? The South African would be a new broom to bring change in the way football should be run. Africa is the only continent that has not been tainted by corruption at Fifa.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kalombo\u2019s comments follows the committee\u2019s admission of Prince Ali Al Hussein (Jordan), Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa (Qatar), J\u00e9r\u00f4me Champagne (France), Gianni Infantino (Italy) and South African Sexwale for the February 26,2015 elections to take place in Switzerland.<\/p>\n
In a statement made available to The Daily Times yesterday, the committee said they had dropped Michel Platini and Liberian Musa Hassan Bility after \u201cthe Ethics Committee conducted integrity checks on the candidates.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe integrity check included a review of corporate records, litigation cases, bankruptcy proceedings, potential regulatory actions taken against the candidate and a review of media reports concerning potential red flags (fraudulent behaviour, match manipulation, human rights violations, etc.). Each candidate was then asked to comment on the content of the detailed report produced,\u201d reads the statement in part.<\/p>\n
The dropped candidates are free to appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland. Most of the candidates have since courted Football Association of Malawi to drum up support.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
