Playing off handicap 11, Welkam Phiri played a good round of golf to count out Furkan Gani on 36 points and earn MTL Golf Championship at Blantyre Sports Club on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Phiri, who has been in good form lately, posted 16 points on the front nine and 20 on return to emerge the best among 78 golfers in the tournament.<\/p>\n
In his victory speech, Phiri said he was proud to be part of MTL\u2019s 87-year history in Malawi.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I was in college and I wanted to talk to my mother in Nkhata- Bay, I used to send her a letter to tell her that I would call her in two weeks. She used to walk 10 Kilometres to access a telephone. Now, I don\u2019t struggle to communicate with her because she uses an MTL phone. In fact, I called her to tell her I had won this championship,\u201d explained Phiri, drawing a round of applause from fellow golfers.<\/p>\n
In the ladies\u2019 division, Doreen Kavala, emerged the best after posting 37 points, whereas Harriet Mariam finished second with 35 points.<\/p>\n
Chadwick Mphande won the seniors\u2019 category with 32 points.<\/p>\n
In the subsidiary prizes, Harold Lungu won the men\u2019s longest drive on hole number two while the same accolade went to Teri Amaro in the ladies\u2019 division.<\/p>\n
Connie Muguvu won the ladies\u2019 nearest to the pin, which also went to Allen Mukwena in the men\u2019s division.<\/p>\n
MTL\u2019s chief executive officer, Harry Gombachika, said MTL was back in golf for good after sponsoring another tournament in Mzuzu two weeks ago.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe at MTL are in a transition. Our renewed mission is to provide quality communication solutions in the country. We see ourselves transforming people\u2019s lives through communication. We want to be with golfers in offering communication solutions. Golf is a good platform for stakeholders to communicate about several businesses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
