{"id":11186,"date":"2015-10-29T08:56:45","date_gmt":"2015-10-29T08:56:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=11186"},"modified":"2015-10-29T08:56:45","modified_gmt":"2015-10-29T08:56:45","slug":"joyce-banda-trashes-national-intelligence-bureau-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2015\/10\/29\/joyce-banda-trashes-national-intelligence-bureau-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Joyce Banda trashes National Intelligence Bureau report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former head of State and president of the People\u2019s Party, Joyce Banda, has said she and her family will hold incumbent President Peter Mutharika responsible should anything bad happen to her son Geoffrey Kachale Banda or any member of her family.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement issued on October 23, 2015, which we have seen, JB trashes the intelligence report that links her son, Geoffrey, to attempts to sabotage the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government.<\/p>\n<p>National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) report implicates Geoffrey in an alleged plot to bring down the Mutharika administration by sponsoring and promoting dissent.<\/p>\n<p>The report dated October 16, 2015, alleges that Leader of Opposition and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera, civil society leaders Dorothy Ngoma and Martha Kwataine, among other people, receive millions of kwacha from foreign donors to sabotage the DPP administration.<\/p>\n<p>But in response to the allegations, Banda says the contents of the report are based on unproven facts, challenging both the DPP administration and the NIB to provide tangible evidence to substantiate the claims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have taken the liberty to issue this statement, as a mother, with a view to challenge the NIB and the DPP government to substantiate these allegations and many other allegations against me and my family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have personally endured untold political persecution and abuse in the past year and half at the hands of the DPP government and I would not sit back and look at some misguided government institutions and individuals transfer that misery onto my children,\u201d reads part of the statement.<\/p>\n<p>According to Banda, the allegations on her son are not only false but also malicious aimed at pursuing a hate campaign against her. She said as far as she knows, her son is not interested in politics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGeoffrey is an entrepreneur who lives abroad. As far as I know him, he has never expressed any interest in politics and any attempts to link him to politics are as futile as they are ridiculous,\u201d Banda says in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of implicating my children, my entire family and other distinguished members of society in imagined crimes, His Excellency President Peter Mutharika and his government must consider a serious introspection exercise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish to call upon the civil society, the clergy and the diplomatic community in Malawi to keep a watchful eye on the DPP government to deter any attempts to return the nation to dictatorship through disrespect for human rights and bad governance,\u201d reads the statement.<\/p>\n<p>However, in an earlier interview with <em>The Daily Times, <\/em>Information Minister Jappie Mhango said he does not comment on intelligence issues.
