African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) is investing $30,000 (K16.5 million) annually in Ary Graca African Dream Project it is running with Volleyball Association of Malawi (Vam).<\/p>\n
The project, which is being run in 35 African countries on a pilot basis, aims at developing grassroots volleyball.<\/p>\n
CAVB technical and development officer, Enzanai Tafara Madzivire, who is also African Dream supervisor, said his organisation was supporting African volleyball associations to safeguard the future of the sport.<\/p>\n
\u201cApart from the grants, we also provide nets and T-shirts to make sure that more kids between the ages of eight and 12 have access to the sport. The project will be run as a pilot in four years and the countries that make progress will be supported further so that in 10 years, they should produce top athletes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are using a scientific long-term athlete development programme. We are empowering associations through provision of training and the financial support. It is our goal that Africa should produce top athletes. Some countries such as Namibia have shown good progress so far.\u201d<\/p>\n
Madzivire is currently on a five-day visit in Malawi to assess the progress of the project and conduct coaching clinics.<\/p>\n
So far 200 children from Blantyre, Zomba, Lilongwe and Mzuzu are participating in the project.<\/p>\n
Vam president, Jappie Mhango, said his association has the capacity to handle the project.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have trained a lot of personnel, in fact, recently one of our coaches returned from Germany where he was undergoing high-level training for six months to develop capacity within the federation at technical level,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have been doing a lot in terms of developing the youth. We have been using the Presidential Initiative on Sports as a catalyst for youth development. That is why a lot of kids are participating in this sport.\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
