Malawi national football team players refused to entertain fans\u2019 calls to celebrate with them John Banda\u2019s 43rd minute goal at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday.<\/p>\n
The Flames shunned the supporters in reaction to the abuse the players endured in the build-up to Sunday\u2019s World Cup qualifier they won 1-0 against Tanzania.<\/p>\n
Malawi vice-captain, Chiukepo Msowoya, said the players wanted to prove the supporters wrong on Sunday.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was really a bad experienced especially whenever we were going to the training ground. We faced a lot of abuse when we were passing through Limbe.<\/p>\n
We wanted to impress the fans on Sunday, but unfortunately we could not overturn the deficit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Several Flames players said they were gutted by the insults.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was an agreement that we should not react in any way to the fans. Everybody was not happy with the treatment the fans gave us. It distracted us a lot during the preparations. They were supposed to support us,\u201d said one of the players.<\/p>\n
However, Flames team manager, Clement Kafwafwa, downplayed the incident.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was not really a plot against the fans. Everybody was looking for a positive result, therefore, they were disappointed after failing to go through,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Abusive slurs rained on the players at every public appearance even at the training ground.<\/p>\n
Mtawali was also at the end of the bitter criticism.<\/p>\n
