A goalkeeping dilemma at Moyale Barracks has forced the team’s management to recall their former ‘goalie’, Wilson Mzgezge Mkandawire, from retirement.
Moyale, who won the Standard Bank Cup twice in 2008 and 2010 with Mkandawire between the sticks, dropped the award-winning player in a controversial manner. Moyale did not welcome Mkandawire upon returning from a peace-keeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2012.
Moyale coaches, Nicholas Mhango and Themba Mtontholo, opted for McDonald Harawa who was in top-form.
But, with Harawa now playing second fiddle to Juma Chikwenga, Moyale risk losing their remote TNM Super League title ambitions.
Moyale are on position 10 with 20 points from 17 games.
Another substitute goalie, Olisey Nkhwazi, has height disadvantage, but he is not consistent enough. Davie Chisambi is entrusted with the goalkeeper trainer’s role .
Mtontholo confirmed the recalling of Mkandawire, saying he still has the potential to serve them.
“We are currently getting his legislation finalised with the Super League of Malawi and shortly, you will see him manning the goals,” he added.
Mkandawire on Tuesday said he will impress the coaches.
Mkandawire joined Moyale Barracks in 2005 from Admarc Tigers, now Azam.
