At least 1,000 households that were affected by floods in Nsanje and Chikwawa on Wednesday received solar energy lamps, courtesy of Habitat for Humanity Malawi.
Habitat for Humanity Malawi Disaster Risk Reduction Coordinator, Alfred Kaliwo, said the lamps provide an energy-efficient lighting option for the flood victim survivors.
“Since most of them [flood victims] lost their belongings, the donated solar energy lamps are incentive to rebuild their lives in their relocation sites so that they don’t go back to disaster-risk areas. In addition, the lamps are environmental friendly and portable such that they can be used indoor and outdoor.
“We never had a disaster risk reduction programme in our organisation, but this is our starting point and we are hoping to continue. Some donors are willing to provide us with funds to start providing them with water and shelter among them in their relocation sites,” said Kaliwo.
Group Village Head Kadyamba while thanking Habitat for Humanity Malawi for the donation, appealed for more urgent need of basics like water, permanent shelter, medical care, food, and school.
The solar lamps were sourced from Habitat for Humanity Netherlands.
