Police have said 16 people died in road accidents during this year’s Easter holiday.

National Police spokesperson, James Kadadzera, said 16 people also died in road accidents during Easter last year.

However, Kadadzera said the number of road accidents has increased from 44 last year to 67 this year, representing 43 percent rise.

Kadadzera said most of the accidents were caused by irresponsible behaviours of road users.

“As police, we are worried that the country continues losing lives due to road accidents. We are calling upon all road users to follow all the road safety rules and regulations to avoid such accidents,” he said.

According to Kadadzera, out of the 67 road accidents, 38 happened in the Southern Region, 21 in the Central Region, seven in the Eastern Region while one accident occured in the Northern Region.

Road accidents have already killed hundreds of Malawians this year.
