The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) has said their preliminary assessment indicates that 100 people from 20 households have been affected by the Rumphi rainstorm and landslide that happened in the wee hours of Saturday in areas around Tchalo.
A statement released on April 21, which Secretary and Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs Wilson Moleni has signed, further indicates that the distribution of basic relief items such as food and kitchen utensils started on Monday.
The assessment was done by officials from Dodma, Rumphi District Council and humanitarian partners.
Meanwhile, Sub- Traditional Authority Chapinduka has asked the government to support affected households with construction materials.
“Most importantly, it would be good if those affected benefit from the Malata and Cement Subsidy Programme,” he said.
Police and Malawi Defense Force personnel have been working in affected areas to assist in recovery of the five missing people.
