President Peter Mutharika continues to visit people displaced by floods, as he visits Nsanje and Chikwawa districts today.
This comes after the President visited Machinga and Zomba and other districts last week.
Chief Secretary to the Government, Lloyd Muhara, indicates in a statement released on Saturday that Mutharika will visit the two districts today afternoon.
“[On] Monday 18th March 2019 at 12:30pm, His Excellency will visit people affected by floods and staying at Chikunkha School near Nsanje Boma in T/A [Traditional Authority] Malemia, Nsanje District.
“[On] Monday 18th March 2019 at 3:00pm, His Excellency will visit people affected by floods and staying at Namicheni Primary School in Paramount [Chief] Lundu area, Nchalo, in Chikwawa District,” the statement reads.
The country has borne the brunt of floods, with the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) indicating that at least 56 people have died, with a total of 184,589, or 922,945 people, affected, and 16,545 households, roughly 82, 725 people, displaced.
This has prompted countries such as South Africa to send rescue experts to Malawi. A team of seven experts is on the ground.
“The assessment to establish the extent of the damage in all the 14 affected districts is still underway. The department continues to coordinate search and rescue operations as well as provision of relief assistance to the affected people,” reads part of a Dodma statement.
Meanwhile, Dodma Principal Secretary and Commissioner of Disasters, Wilson Mollen, has pleaded with Malawians living in low lying areas in the Shire Valley, especially in Chikwawa and Nsanje, to move upland.
