ON MALAWI SOIL— Hetzer

Well-Known Rally driver and first female auto-mechanic from Germany, Heidi Hetzer, has asked women to embrace technical skills as a route to economic empowerment.

She said this at the Embassy of Germany in Lilongwe.

She stopped over at the embassy on her six-month journey across Africa, where she is circumnavigating using an old car, Toyota Landcruiser.

“Time has come for women to have more technical skills so that they can be independent. This is one of the ways through which society can have women who are empowered,” Hetzer said.

She said, after the trip, she would ask tourists from around the world to visit Malawi.

She started her six-month journey across Africa in November 2018 in Egypt using a four-wheel drive that can be upgraded to a motorhome and can survive in desert conditions.

Her journey will take her to Cape Town via the west coast of Africa in the second half of 2019.

Hetzer is a former owner of one of the biggest car dealerships in Berlin, Germany, who has been taking part in Rally competitions with vintage cars and has won over 150 prizes during her life. Her next destination is Zambia.
