United Democratic Front (UDF) has dismissed claims that it is in talks with UTM for an electoral alliance ahead of the May 21 Tripartite Elections.
UDF spokesperson, Ken Ndanga, Monday dismissed the claims, saying the party would go solo in the elections.
Ndanga said apart from 2009 elections when the party ended up not featuring a candidate due to an alliance with Malawi Congress Party (MCP), UDF has always contested as a stand-alone party.
“We have never met with any political party for an alliance. Those claims are fake news. We have never and we will never make any electoral alliance for this forthcoming elections.
“Why are people so eager spreading these rumours? Do we look like we cannot contest without any electoral alliance? Previously as a party, we have stood without alliances and this time we are doing so. On Thursday, we will present the nomination papers. Come and witness; we won’t have any alliance,” he said.
UTM secretary general, Patricia Kaliati, Monday also dismissed any alliance talk between the two parties.
Presidential candidates are this week presenting nomination papers to Malawi Electoral Commission, with issues of choice of running mates and alliances domination discourse.
Monday, People’s Party announced that it had pulled out of an alliance with UTM, three days after announcing it.
MCP and Umodzi Party have presented their nomination papers and announced their running mates.
