The Ministry of Health has said over 500 babies were born on Christmas across the country.

Ministry of Health statistics indicate that, in Blantyre alone, 71 babies, which included 40 males and 31 females, were born. In Chiradzulu 36 babies were born on the day, in Mwanza 13 babies were born and in Neno nine babies were born.

The ministry also indicates that, in Chikwawa, 38 babies were born while in Mangochi 127 were born. 203 babies were born in the Northern Region. In Lilongwe, at Kamuzu Central Hospital, 13 babies were born on the day.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Joshua Malango, said the babies were born in both government and Christian Health Association of Malawi hospitals.

“The babies were born healthy and their mothers were in high spirits,” Malango said.

Health rights activist, Maziko Matemba, has said this shows that there is a population boom.

“It is alarming for 500 babies to be born on Christmas alone considering that Malawi is one of the countries with a high population growth rate,” he said.
