Fam AGM makes drastic changes

Delegates to Saturday’s Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mangochi made drastic changes to the association’s constitution, effectively paving the way for long-time president Walter Nyamilandu to stand for another three terms.

The delegates also struck out the Malawi School Certificate of Education minimum requirement for those wishing to contest for the association’s executive member positions.

Nyamilandu now has the freedom to continue leading Malawi football as delegates removed the three-term limit to the association’s presidency.

This makes Nyamilandu eligible to contest in Fam’s 2019 elections since the amendments will only be effective after the polls.

Fam Legal Affairs Committee Chairperson, Jabbar Alide, confirmed that the amendments give the liberty to Nyamilandu to contest if he wishes.

“Amendments do not apply restrospectively; so, Nyamilandu is eligible to contest and serve for three more terms,” Alide said.

But Nyamilandu told a press conference recently that he would not seek re-election.

The meeting, held at Sunbird Nkopola, also agreed that National Women’s Football Association should have two representatives in Fam’s executive committee.

Delegates also maintained 36 as the number of delegates to Fam’s general assembly.

Nyamilandu said the AGM tackled important issues.

“We had a fantastic AGM and very healthy debate where presentations on our activities and finances were made. We had undertaken a number of activities in terms of youth football development, training, and competitions. Malawi national football teams were all very active at all levels. We are hopeful that we will have a fantastic 2019,” Nyamilandu said.

During the meeting, delegates also approved Fam’s electoral body and electoral appeals committee members for the association’s 2019 elections.
