PUSHING FRONTIERS—Kumbatila captured in South Africa after the event

Body-building is considered a domain for males in Malawi. Not so with female bodybuilder Doreen Kumbatila, who impressed during her debut, finishing on position five during the Gentle Giants competition held in South Africa on Saturday.

Reports from South Africa indicate that Kumbatila participated in the competition alongside compatriots, Frazier Zeka and Mr Malawi, Emmanuel Muhuwa, who were in the men’s section.

The trio reportedly self-sponsored the trip.

Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Association of Malawi General Secretary, Harold Mwayang’ana, said they were encouraged by Kumbatila’s performance.

“We are yet to get full details but Doreen finished fifth, which is commendable,” he said.

On his Facebook page, the association’s former president, Charles Ulaya, hailed Kumbatila for shinning.
