Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Youth and Technical sub-Committee Chairperson, James Mwenda, has said they are looking forward to Malawi under-20 national football team’s participation in the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) Championship.

Mwenda commented on the junior Flames ahead of today’s draw for the championship which will take place in Kitwe, Zambia, from next month.

“Malawi will, again this year, participate in the Cosafa under-20 tournament. We are looking forward to the draw. We are ready for any team which we would be drawn against,” he said.

Cosafa Deputy General Secretary, Suzgo Nyirenda, Tuesday said Zambia, South Africa and Lesotho have been seeded ahead of the draw.

Nyirenda said there would be no guest teams at this year’s tournament. Last year, Uganda were the guest participants at the competition.

“We are set for the draw and we are glad that, for the first time, we have Reunion Island taking part in the tournament.

“In pot one, we have Malawi, Zimbabwe, Namibia and eSwatini while in pot two, there is Mozambique, Mauritius, Angola and the Reunion Island,” he said.

Last year, Malawi were knocked out of the group stages of the competition after beating Swaziland 3-2 and drawing against Zambia 0-0 and Uganda 1-1.
