Southern African Development Community (Sadc) has urged African countries to invest in peace-building.

Sadc Executive Secretary, Stergomena Lawrence Tax, on Monday told security agencies that underwent peace training in Salima that countries should invest in peace and prepare for eventualities.

“Things have changed greatly; we are now in a world of very sophisticated technology. We have to invest in modern technology to be able to protect ourselves. Peace is also not cheap in the sense that if you want to develop you will invest in a peaceful environment. Investors will not come to a region which is not peaceful,” she said

Over 500 military, police officers and civilians from 12 countries participated in the command post exercise, code named Ex-Umodzi.

The two-week training, conducted at Malawi Armed Forces College in Salima District, focused on peace and prosperit in for the African region.

Malawi Defence Force General Commander, Griffin Supuni Phiri, said, through the training, participants gained knowledge and skills that would help them promote peace.

He said Malawi is trying its best to invest in peace building.

“We are investing in peace -in the country. Part of it is the training. In peace-keeping, there are a lot of things that are involved, not only military work. It is also about the rule of law, following procedures and understanding the dynamics of politics so that our troops can work better,” he said
