Malawi Special Olympics squad is expected to arrive today having collected 12 medals at the just ended Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles, United States of America.
Team Malawi featured participants in athletics and tennis during the games and at the end of the competition, the Special Olympics squad won seven gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals.
In athletics, Team Malawi participated in 100m, 200m, 50m, long jump while in lawn tennis one athlete participated.
In 200m, Mussa Luhanga and Clara Phiri won a gold medal each while Ethel Bonongwe, and Dennis Mologeni were on position four and Miracle Buleya was on position seven.
One athlete Agnes Lekaleka was disqualified after she was injured during the 200m race.
In 100m race, Agnes Lekaleka, Mussa Luhanga and Clara Phiri got a gold medal each while Miracle Buleya was on position four and Denis Mologeni was on position six.
In 50m race, Desire Namaona won a gold medal and Henry Katopola won a silver medal while in standing long jump Ethel Bonongwe won a gold medal,
Katopola won a silver medal and Mandela Kalua was disqualified because he exceeded the standard limit for standing long jump according to his ability.
Mphatso Chiphwanya, Malawi’s lone representative in lawn tennis, won two bronze medals.
The Special Olympics World Summer Games ended on Saturday having started on July 25.
