President Peter Mutharika took to the world stage at the on-going United Nations General Assembly (Unga), paying tribute to Malawi’s first ambassador to the United Nations (UN) David Rubadiri and the organisation’s first secretary general from Black Africa Kofi Annan.
Addressing the Assembly Tuesday in New York, the United States, Mutharika described Annan as an “African inspiring spirit of the world.”
“Kofi Annan was the voice of peace, a voice of the voiceless, the conscience and moral arbiter of the world. I urge this Assembly to raise high that flag of peace that my brother Kofi Annan stood for. I urge this Assembly to rise and march forward with that spirit of defending peace,” he said.
On Rubadiri, Mutharika described him as the conscience of Africa.
“David Rubadiri was the conscience of the African continent, and a pan African poet who was adopted by East Africa as their son,’’ he said.
Unga is being held under the theme, ‘Making the United Nations Relevant to All People: Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Peaceful, Equitable and Sustainable Societies.’
Mutharika assured the delegates that Malawi is committed to participating in efforts to maintain world peace.
“Malawi remains committed to promoting and protecting human rights. We remain committed to participating in international cooperation to resolve challenges that face human societies,” Mutharika said.
Unga started on September 18 with the US President, Donald Trump, officially opening the summit on Tuesday.
