Malawi National Council of Sports has engaged the services of six Norwegians to help revive Physical Education (PE) in the country’s schools.
The council’s Sports Development Manager, Ruth Mzengo, said the six came into the country early this month under a programme called Youth Sports Exchange Programme.
Mzengo said the Europeans are in the country as volunteers and will be working with various primary schools for the next 10 years.
“We are working hard to revive PE in all our schools across the country. We would like to see our youths growing up playing games of their choice. The best place to start this is at primary schools,” she said.
Mzengo said the volunteers have been stationed in the cities of Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu where most primary schools are within easy reach.
She said under the same program, Malawi has also sent a volunteer to Zambia and could do the same with Norway.
“We have sent a judo coach to Zambia and possibilities are there that we could also send other volunteers to Norway. This is an exchange program which will see us developing sports at grassroots level,” Mzengo said.
PE is one of the oldest subjects in the country’s primary school curriculum which seems to have died a natural death over the years.
The scenario has seen sports grounds in most schools giving way to classroom blocks, teachers’ houses and other school structures.
Most schools apparently disregard the need to maintain the subject as they consider it a waste of time.
