Police in Mchinji District has arrested a 23-year-old woman for allegedly chopping off a co-wife’s nose in a tussle over their husband.
Mchinji Police Station spokesperson, Kaitano Lubrino, Monday identified the suspect as Charity Eliya, who is a second wife to Yakobe Thandizani.
“They got married five years ago but she has been at loggerheads with co-wife Veronica Moneya, 25. Due to persistent tussling between the two wives, the husband introduced a programme, in which he was spending three days and nights at each wife’s house.
“It is against this background that, after noticing that the husband was not honouring the arrangement, the suspect woke up early on September 1, went to the house of first wife Veronica Moneya, and confronted her. She demanded to know why the husband, Thandizani, did not show up when it was her [Charity] turn,” Lubrino said.
The police publicist said the suspect returned to Veronica’s house later in the day, started fighting, in the course of which she snatched Veronica, chopped off her nose using her teeth and left her unconscious.
Lubrino said community members took the victim to Chimwankango Health Centre, where medical personnel referred her to Mchinji District Hospital.
“She will appear in court to answer the charge of conduct likely to cause grievous bodily harm,” he said.
Charity is from Zikiliya Village, Traditional Authority Gumba, in the district.
