REBECCA CHIMJEKA:

The Public Appointments Committee of Parliament (Pac) has started interviewing people President Peter Mutharika appointed to different positions in the government.

Pac Chairperson, Lingson Belekanyama, said the interviews started on Monday and would run up to the weekend.

Belekanyama said some of the individuals to be interviewed are Glad Chembe Munthali, who was appointed Malawi’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, and board members of Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets (PPDA).

New commissioners of the Teaching Service Commission are also billed to appear before the committee.

Belekanyama said the committee would forward results to Chief Secretary to the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC), Lloyd Muhara.

“We have started interviewing the people. Some were appointed last year while others were appointed this year. The High Commissioner to Tanzania was supposed to be confirmed earlier this year but, because of some procedures, the committee couldn’t do that,” Belekanyama said.

Parliament repealed the Public Procurement Act (2003) and enacted the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Act 2017, which established the PPDA as a body responsible for the regulation, monitoring and oversight of public procurement and disposal of assets in Malawi.

The Act establishes a board that is expected to oversee function of the PPDA.
