The Malawi Police Service (MPS) Friday opened a Crime Analysis Unit, which is designed to enhance Malawi’s response to transnational organised crime.

The unit is a pilot project being financed by the European Union (EU) through the International Police (Interpol) under its project called Enect.

Inspector General (IG) of Police, Rodney Jose, told The Daily Times that Malawi’s unit is unique in the sense that it is the first of its kind in the whole African Region.

Jose said the unit is already operational with officers, who have just completed the orientation, on the ground collecting data from different police stations for analysis using the provided analytical system to support police operations.

“The Enact Project aims at enhancing Africa’s response to transnational organised crime; hence, the opening of this unit [in Malawi Police Service] is a mile ahead towards achieving the objectives of the project,” Jose said.

He assured that following the orientation and technical support from Enact Project, his charges are now equipped and committed to respond to transnational organised crime, which is in line with the Enact Project main objective.

But Jose warned his charges against abuse of the resources, saying the financiers had spelt stringent conditions to their support, including termination of the agreement when cases of abuse of the resources is reported.

Enact Project coordinator (Operational Support and Directorate), Richard-Bober Nathalie, pledged her organisation’s support to the Malawi Police Service to enable them fight organised crime.
