Overcome the fear monster

With Patrick Achitabwino:

Take a sit. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath and reflect on the many dreams you ever had; the dreams that would have made a difference in your life. Upon introspecting, you will notice that you are not what you had always wished to be. You will see many lost opportunities and you may even blame yourself. But this should not give birth to self-blame.

This is the meditation to see yourself in the real context of what you could have been had you keenly followed your dreams.

Most of us will realise that we missed the jackpot of our dreams because when we faced the monster of fear, the toothless monster of fear, we backed off and that swayed us from our dreams. We had the wrong calculation that everything will keep on moving swiftly for us. That is not life. Life has to test you – test your resilience, test your courage and test your bravery. One cardinal rule to be successful in life is to be fearless, to wade through the uncharted waters and to do that which many consider unthinkable, unworkable and insane. That is the route that makes a difference. If you do that which everyone does, there is no uniqueness and you are competing with millions and billions of others. If you do that which is unique, you have no competitor; you are your only competitor.

Nick Vujicic gives us the true meaning of fear and this meaning matters. Fear simply means False Evidence Appearing Real. Fear is just fear. If you happen to take notice, you will realise that most fears you have never materialise. You may even laugh at yourself why you were afraid in the first instance. Remember the time you sat for an examination that you considered to be tough. When you were given the marked script, you had it folded. You were even afraid to open it and see the marks. But the moment you unfolded it, you noticed that you scored high. At first, you thought your eyes were deceiving you up until you looked at the marks again and again and your friends congratulated and even envied you for excelling. Fear is just fear; a mere false evidence.

No one else can drive fear but yourself. You are the one with the power to feed or starve the monster of fear.

Dorothy Thompson says “only when we are no longer afraid do we begin to live”.

That brings in the sense of bravery, an essential ingredient in the success formula. John Leach pleads with you to master the art of bravery. The art of bravery is when you decide to step beyond your comfort zone and expand outside your current capabilities. Accepting this way of thinking and applying it to your goal setting will increase your chances of success. By practising the art of bravery, your goals will become bigger and more successful you will become!

From now on, be courageous and realise that nothing is impossible. Never set limits on what you can achieve. All what you have managed to attain has been on the basis that you never set limits to achieve it and that is why you made it. People that achieve bigger and larger than life dreams were courageous in the first instance. They believed in the impossible and that made a difference. What sets others apart from us on the ladder of success is their courage, their bravery and their ability to face the monster of fear face-to-face and conquer.

Eddie Rickenbacker says: “Courage is doing what you are afraid to do. There can be no courage unless you are scared.”

Fear will put you down, cook you in the pot of no progress and crush you in the dungeon of envy.

This is what John Leach says: “There are a wide range of factors that fuel the fear to take a creative leap in the dark and inhibit the progression of your new ideas. These include losing money, rejection and humiliation. Consequently, many great ideas stay on the drawing board and prevent people from creating something that could potentially be revolutionary, groundbreaking and inspirational.”

Decide now, decide today, decide this moment to conquer fear and that will make a difference.

There are no impossible dreams. There is nothing that you cannot achieve. Just hammer to death the fear monster that has been a stumbling block to your success. Remember the principle; it is not over until you win.
