Mutharika asks losers not to quit DPP

Malawi’s President Peter Mutharika on Tuesday asked the losers at the party’s elective convention not to quit the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) but stay to make the party better.

“This convention has been peaceful and we have emerged stronger,” Mutharika said in his acceptance speech after being elected unopposed as the party’s president.

Mutharika, who is facing calls to resign and call for early elections, said that the ones that lost positions will be accommodated in the party and given other roles.

The delegates also voted for Uladi Mussa as their main man in the opposition strong hold of central region and Kondwani Nankhumwa was elected vice president tasked to man the party’s southern region stronghold which is under threat from Mutharika’s opponents.

“Whether you have won or not we all family, we are DPP. What we need to do is work together and win the 2019 elections,” Mutharika said

Nankhumwa beat Trade minister Henry Mussa and Agriculture Minister Joseph Mwanvekha while George Chaponda, who is facing graft charges, pulled out of the race minutes before the voting started’

Mussa beat Hetherwick Ntaba and Minister of Justice Sam Tembenu for the position of central region.

Sports and Labour Minister Francis Kasaila also lost his position as spokesperson of the party to Nicholas who chaired the convention
