Newly crowned Airtel Top 8 champions, Blue Eagles, will share K9 million of the cup’s K15 million prize money, The Daily Times has learnt.
Eagles won the cup after beating Nyasa Big Bullets 1-0, courtesy of Stuart Mbunge’s late penalty.
The club’s Chairperson, Alexander Ngwala, Monday confirmed that management has rewarded the players with K1 million and they will also share K9 million, which is 60 percent of the prize money.
Management also hiked game bonuses for the match from K20,000 to K50,000 per player. Eagles’ players receive K20,000 game bonus for a win and half the amount for a draw.
“We applaud the players for showing great character throughout the tournament. Our aim is to motivate the players so that they should do well in other competitions and also fight for the league championship,” Ngwala said.
In reaction, Eagles Captain Micium Mhone said: “We are thankful to management for making everything possible. It was not easy but we worked hard to win.”
Eagles have set a new Airtel Top 8 record, having finished the competition without conceding. A total of 12 goals were scored in the tournament compared to 28 for last season.
Eagles Coach, Derlerk Msakakuona, said self-belief was the driving force for his side.
Be Forward Wanderers midfielder Joseph Kamwendo finished as the cup’s top goalscorer with two goals from the penalty spot.
Silver Strikers won the inaugural edition when they beat Wanderers 10-9 on post-match penalties at the same venue.
