ST Andrews International High School of Blantyre has called on local sports scouts to patronise the school’s talent identification exercises regularly.
Speaking on Tuesday during a Track and Field Sports Day, the school’s Sports Coordinator, Diana Gausi, said they have many talented athletes that can represent Malawi in international competitions, if given an opportunity.
“[Some] people out there have been of the view that we are only confined to this school but this is not the case because we go out to compete with other schools.
“There is huge talent which just lacks exposure here. So, my plea to the coaches and scouts is that they should be coming here to look for talent which can represent the country on the international scene,” Gausi said.
She said the school has, in the recent past, contributed two footballers and athletes to national teams.
Gausi said this year’s event was a success as athletes broke seven records.
Among the records, Chioma Okafor achieved 4.79 metres in long jump while Melinda Mhango triumphed in shot-put after throwing over 10 metres.
Okafor said she was happy to emerge among the best performers of the day.
“I have represented this country in international competitions and it has been my dream to do even better. So, I will continue working hard,” Okafor said.
Winners during the day received trophies and medals.
