BY PRINCE HENDERSON:

The Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM), the umbrella body of Catholic bishops in the country, is holding its Second Annual Plenary Meeting which started from Monday and ends Friday.

The meeting, which is being held at the Catholic Secretariat in Lilongwe, has all bishops in attendance and diocesan administrator of Dedza Diocese.

“The meeting will, among other things, discuss matters pertaining to priestly formation in spiritual formation centres and Major Seminaries; receive progress reports from the Catholic University of Malawi and St. John the Baptist-Daughters of Mary Immaculate University,”reads part of a statement signed by ECM Secretary General Fr Henry Saindi.

The statement further says the bishops will appraise the conference on the country’s socio-political and economic situation and preparations for next year’s tripartite elections and reflect on the current food situation and recommend possible mitigating factors.

They will also receive progress and status reports from national bodies and organisations such as Association of Diocesan Catholic Clergy in Malawi, Association of Women in Religious Institutes in Malawi, Association of Men Religious in Malawi and the National Laity Council which has the Laity Committee for Seminaries and Catholic Women Organisation.

“The bishops will also receive progress and status reports from ecumenical bodies such as Public Affairs Committee; Christian Health Association of Malawi and Christian Service Committee,” Saindi said.

According to Saindi, the bishops will, during the meeting, continue to seek ways of ensuring the protection of people with albinism.
