Njakwa-Livingstonia Road costs K323 million in compensations

The government through National Roads Fund Administration (NRFA) has coughed K323 million to be paid out as compensation to 430 households along the site where there is construction of Njakwa-Livingstonia Road in Rumphi district.

NRFA Chief Executive Officer Stewart Malata said the authority had already paid out K255 million to some of households at Phwaphwa through Ntchenachena to Livingstonia.

“The households that demanded compensation were 475. However, we approved 430 after our feasibility studies revealed that the remaining 45 households were far from where the road would pass.

Malata then further said the institution has also not paid affected households from Muhuju to Njakwa.

Contractors of the project Mota Engil’s site Engineer, Emmanuel Chimtengo said the communities’ cooperation has helped to reduce cases of theft and other misunderstandings since they started the works in November 2016.

According to Chmtengo, 22 percent of the work on the project has been completed.

Both the government and the contractor say the slow progress of the road construction work is because of bad terrain which sometimes forces them stop working, especially during rainy season.

The K39.9 billion Njakwa- Livingstonia road construction project is being supervised by both NRFA and National Roads Authority.
