Department of the Registrar General has said development of Technology and Innovation Support Centres (TISC) in the country would help protect intellectual property from abuse.
The centres are developed under the World Intellectual Property Organisation (Wipo) programme.
It provides innovators in developing countries with access to locally based, high quality technology information and related services, helping them to exploit their innovative potential and to create, protect and manage their intellectual property rights.
This comes when Malawi is lagging behind in intellectual property rights protection.
Speaking during a Wipo workshop on the development of TISC network in Blantyre on Tuesday, Registrar General, Chapusa Phiri, said the initiative would give innovators access to quality technology in protecting their intellectual property rights.
He said the programme gives innovators a platform to sharpen their ideas through efficient use of science and technology.
“The programme is timely. It would see innovators prioritising science and technology in their inventions, which, in turn, would help develop the country,” Phiri said.
Wipo Industrial Property Information Officer, Elangi Ituku, said Malawi could foster its scientific and technical base and master scientific and technical fields through the TISC programme.
“The purpose of the TISC programme is to reduce the technical and scientific gaps which exist between developing countries [such as Malawi] and industrialised countries” Ituku said.
One of the participants, Director of SiGuba Farming & Agri Machines, Thomas Damaso, said the Wipo programme would promote business growth in the country.
