Hockey Association of Malawi (Ham) will hold a three-day Presidential Initiative on Sports Tournament at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources in Lilongwe this weekend.
Ham Chairperson for Media and Marketing, Ivy Kawaza, said schools and clubs would take part in the competition, whose objective is to develop grassroots hockey.
“This being a national event, the other objective is to bring the hockey family together. This is where we can interact and brainstorm on how to develop the sport,” she said.
Some 20 teams have registered for the tournament, which will be played on an eight-aside format.
The champions will pocket K150,000 while half the amount will go to runners-up for the ladies and men’s sections.
Kawaza has appealed to well-wishers to donate towards the event so as to make it colourful.
“We are hoping for a favourable response. If we give the teams incentives, it would help us make the event thrilling and competitive,” she said.
