Malawi’s netball tipped to export more players

International analysts have tipped Malawi to export more netball players following strides that are being made on the ground.

This follows the settling down of all-rounder Lauren Ngwira at Team Northumbria in England as Malawi’s third netball export.

Ngwira has joined Manchester Thunder shooter, Joyce Mvula, in the UK National Vitality Super League and Mwawi Kumwenda who plies her trade with Melbourne Vixens of Australia.

According to www. leymanck.com, observers have already started describing the trio as early soldiers playing professional netball abroad in elite leagues who can open doors for other hard working netballers to follow.

The website also recognised the impact of former Malawi national netball team coach and legendary shooter, Mary Waya, as another landmark that highlights Malawi’s penetration on the international netball front.

“Not forgetting at the top, Africa’s only expatriate coach in the UK in the name of Mary Waya who is imparting her skills seriously at Benecos Mavericks Netball team of the UK National Vitality Super League,” reads the site.

The article further projected that Malawi could have 10 players abroad by next year.

“In fact, most people see more than ten players playing outside Malawi, probably Europe by next year, if momentum in the game’s development is nationally maintained,” reads the article in part.

Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) General Secretary, Carol Bapu, said she was not surprised with the projections.

“This is a reflection of what is happening on the ground. We have three players and a coach overseas. It shows that our talent is being appreciated,” Bapu said.

She said exporting more players to other countries would help Malawi to bridge the gap which exists between the world’s netball super powers and Malawi.

“If we export more players, we will be able to challenge big teams neck-and-neck and we will also become a big side,” Bapu said.

Despite their recent poor outings, the Queens have done well enough to maintain their position six ranking in the world.
