Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) says it has been swayed to bid for hosting of the Zone 4.3 Under-16 Chess Championship following the impressive performance of junior players in the Presidential Initiative on Sports championship.
“Our youths are working hard to improve their chess skills. It is pleasing that, in every category, we witnessed competitive chess that matches international standards. This motivates us to bid for hosting of the Zone 4.3 under 16 team games this coming December,” Chessam National Schools Chess Coordinator, Margaret Ngugama, said.
Ngugama added that the tournament, which was held at St Andrews International High School in Blantyre on Saturday, served its purpose.
“The tournament was aimed at developing chess. It is exciting to note that all regions were represented in every category. The youngest player in this tournament was six-year-old Devansh Deshmukh who pocketed K10,000,” Ngugama said.
Meanwhile, Chessam President, Kezzie Msukwa, commended parents for supporting their children to travel from as far as Lilongwe.
Msukwa also encouraged the parents to engage Fide trainers to help the children in sharpening their skills.
