Central Region Volleyball League (CRVL) throws off Saturday in Lilongwe with national champions, Kamuzu Barracks (KB), set to make a comeback from a ban.
KB Chairperson, Lutufyo Kayange, said his team expects to continue dominating the league despite missing several players, including skipper McGodwin Mangani, due to military assignments.
“We are pleased to be back in the league. Missing action in the whole year could have dealt us a heavy blow. Some of our players are out of the country but we have capable replacements,” Kayange said, adding that they eventually want to participate in the Zone VI Senior club Championship in Durban, South Africa.
CRVL banned KB for the entire season for violent incidents that ensued during last season’s prize presentation ceremony on February 17, but Volleyball Association of Malawi (Vam) overturned the decision following KB’s appeal.
Vam reduced the suspension to just one national tournament and re-instated KB to the regional league.
The Lilongwe-based military side will compete in A-Division alongside Mipuniro, Blue Eagles, Spikers, Snipers, Parachute Battalion, Bunda and NRC.
KB ladies’ side will also compete in the ladies’ division against Bunda, NRC, Blue Eagles and Snipers.
Another eight teams will also compete in B-Division.
CRVL Chairperson, Robert White, said all was set for the start of the league which Sempha Investments sponsors.
