Democratic Progressive Party Mangochi District Campaign Director, Wellington Mangulenje, has resigned from the party following the party’s Eastern Regional Governor Julius Pipe’s verbal attack on Muslims.
In a letter addressed to Pipe, Secretary General of the party and DPP’s District Governor, Mangulenje said he was saddened by the remarks made against Muslims.
Mangulenje said he is saddened by the remarks Pipe made at one of the rallies that voting for Malawi Congress Party with Sidik Mia, a Muslim, is like voting for a war in 2019.
The remarks, Mangulenje said, are a clear departure from the spirit of togetherness irrespective of tribal, racial, political or religious differences which the late Bingu wa Mutharika championed.
“l recall all that unity and togetherness is what our late father Prof Bingu Wa Mutharika used to preach and advocate through his favourite song of ‘ Tiyende Pamodzi ndi Mtima Umodzi’…,” reads the letter in part.
Mangulenje said he cannot be party to the seeds of hatred being sown by the party’s senior officials like the Eastern Regional Governor Julius Pipe.
“Mr. Regional Governor Sir, wherever our political opponents are, they must be rejoicing with your divisive utterances because, myself, a true young liberal democrat, believes that such utterances have no room in our modern politics,” he said.
Mangulenje said he was born to a Christian father and a Muslim mother.
DPP Secretary General Greselder Jeffrey’s phone could not be reached while the party’s spokesperson Francis Kasaila’s phone went unanswered after several attempts.
