South Africa-based athlete, Peter Chiwaya, finished on position 278 out of 11,000 runners in a 56-kilometre category for Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon held on Saturday in Cape Town.
Chiwaya competed alongside runners from 84 countries, including another Malawian Chiyembekezo Jamali.
Chiwaya clocked 4:14:09 in the race, which Kenyan Justin Kembo won in 03:09:2.
In an interview from South Africa, Chiwaya said he believes he is on the right track to doing better next year.
“My goal was to do it [complete the race] in four hours, and it was possible based on how I divided my time. At Chapmans Peak, we had strong winds which made me struggle. At Constantina Neck, I also struggled because it is hilly. That is where I knew I had missed my goal,” Chiwaya said.
Jamali covered his distance in 4:57:54 even though his overall position cannot be traced.
Malawian lady, Thokozani Unyolo, covered the 21.1 kilometres of the half-marathon in 3:10:01.
Veteran runner Henry Moyo did not take part in the race, despite camping in the Rainbow Nation while compatriot Wages Magombo is reportedly injured.
Moyo, whose camp was sponsored by Old Mutual Malawi to the tune of K700, 000, was not available for a comment.
